Well March certainly came in like a lion!  The first two days were not so bad but that weekend dump of snow has made me really wanting Spring to arrive.

We have some fun activities going on this month in the shop to help take the sting out of all that snow.

We have a new charity project happening and it’s called Empty Arms.  Empty arms offers birth and bereavement support services to Saskatoon and area baby-loss families.  We are doing much the same as our last fundraiser where we sell selected fabric bolts at cost to customers who wish to contribute. You can purchase as little as .1m of the bolt (and we would never say no if someone wanted to purchase an entire bolt!).  Once the bolt is “sold”  the fabric then goes to volunteers who sew tiny clothes, diapers and hats as a way to help bereaved parent(s) honour their babies.  We are pleased to be able to support Empty Arms in this way so they can continue their good works.

We continue to bring new fabrics and notions in at the shop.  We recently received a shipment of Ketan Batiks and a couple of bolts of Fireside plush.  And for those of you who remember our shop sample of Sandy’s Under the Boardwalk quilt from last year we have received more of the Stof Woodie and Friends and have made up more of those hugely popular kits.  We also have brought in the heat rulers - a  ruler you can use with your iron.  Great for pressing accurate 1/4” folds without melting your ruler!  We also have some fun needle threaders with LED lights in them to help you see those elusive eyes in your needles.

In terms of activities at the shop we are planning a little fun for St. Patrick’s Day.  We will have refreshments and goodies, Door prizes and a draw with purchase.  We hope you’ll stop by for fun and shenanigans!

March also brings another Periwinkle Mini-Retreat.  Friday March 23, 9:30 - 10 or 11pm and Saturday 9:30 to 5:30.  Bring your sewing machine and projects and sew 'til your heart's content!  Leave you machine and spend the night in your own cozy bed and then start up again the next day.  There will be snacks and door prizes too!  We only have a couple of spots left so if you're thinking about it, don't delay.

The end of March brings Easter which gives us the opportunity to create another Easter basket full of quilting goodies.  If you make a purchase in the shop you will be able to enter the draw for the basket!  The entries for the Easter Basket will start on the 23rd of March.  The draw will be made on Easter Saturday March 31st at closing.
And that about takes care of March!  As I'm typing up this blog post the sun is shining and the weather is warm (about +1C).  Enjoy these Spring-like temperatures and as always thank you all for your kind words and encouragement.  We really do enjoy helping you with your quilting endeavours.

February 2018

February 2018

Time just seems to be ticking right along.  Our mini-retreat and our Staycation Beach Party were very successful and a lot of fun!  So we look forward to the month of February with all of it's upcoming fun and activities in the shop.

Our workshop with artist Lynne Underwood is set to begin with Sentinel on the 12th.

And of course there's Valentine's Day (or as my daughter likes to call it, Singles Awareness Day).  We will have refreshments and fun (as well as a few specials) all day on the 14th. We hope you can stop in.
We have received shipment of the next release of Outback Wife from Ella Blue Fabrics.  Gorgeous barkcloth that can be used for quilts, bags and garments.
We will also have our first line of Tilda Fabrics called Lemon Tree any day now.  So pretty!
And have you seen the fantastic Jelly Roll Rugs?  One jelly roll, 1.25m of batting and the pattern and you're off and running!  These are really fun!  And once you've got one under your belt you'll be proficient enough to play and use up your batting and fabric scraps too!  We've got the patterns and all the fixin's!
Our classes continue to be popular and produce some really great projects.  This month our Gypsy Wife and Illusions classes will launch in addition to perennial favourites like Hand Quilting, Machine and Ruler quilting and of course our ever popular Learn to Quilt.

And we are starting to think about Spring and Summer classes (which isn't as far off as it seems).

So enjoy your month and we hope you'll stop in even if it's just to say "hello!"

January 2018

Happy New Year Everyone!

We are looking forward to 2018 here at Periwinkle.  We have lots coming up this month.
Currently we have our UFO Challenge in progress.  It was a lot of fun to see everyone's finished projects last year so we thought we'd do it again!  It runs January 8 to February 14th!
There are two chances to win.  First bring in your finished project(s) with a photo of their "before" state for an entry to win a $50 gift certificate.  The second way to win is to purchase your finishing fabrics at the shop (backing, batting, binding etc) and get your purchase price for that purchase back in the form of a Periwinkle gift certificate.  The more you buy the more you win!

In addition to an already great line up of classes - you can check them out at or pick up a class brochure at the shop - we've added a couple more new and exciting ones:

Pattern Fitting with Taran Meyer:
The class consists of two 3-hours classes, Saturday, February 3, 1:30-4:30pm and Saturday, February 10, 9:30am-12:30pm.  We will be working with a pattern of your choice.  It could be a new one or one that you've tried already and want to fix a know issue.  Limit 6 students. Cost is $55.00

The next new classes are actually mini-workshops with guest artist Lynne Underwood from Kamloops, BC ( You can check out her website at  Lynne will be doing 2 workshops based on the art of Gloria Loughman.
The first workshop runs three mornings: Monday, 9:30am-12:30pm, February 12, 19 and 26.  The cost of the workshop for all three mornings is $150.00. Limit 8 students

The second mini-workshop with Lynne Underwood is a similar technique but a little more involved with added techniques like fabric painting.  Birch Trees is 4 evenings, Thursday, 6:00-9:00pm, February 1, 8, 15 and 22nd.  The cost for this workshop is $175.00. Limit 8 students.  Gloria Loughman's book Radiant Landscapes is required. (we'll have copies at the shop)
Registration for all these classes can be done at the shop in person or by phone with a credit card (306) 933-3072.

To add to the merriment we will have our annual Tropical Staycation party on Saturday January 27th.  For those of us who can't escape to hot and sunny destinations, we'll create our own warmth with lots of items on sale and refreshments and draws.  We hope you can join us!

Hello December!

And just like that November has come and gone.  It was a busy month at Periwinkle.  We had a little time to recover from the SQG Quilt Show which was so much fun!  Lots of familiar faces and friends.  Thank you so much for stopping by the Periwinkle booth to say hi and make purchases.  We sure appreciate your business.
We then moved into preparation mode for our annual Periwinkle Retreat at Shekinah.  Three days of creating and sewing, stitching and visiting.  It's always fun and  inspiring.  And it was also my first retreat at the helm so I really enjoyed the cameraderie of a great group of women.  We're from all walks of life but we share the same love of making.  Doesn't get better than that.

December has arrived and we are in Christmas/Holiday season at Periwinkle.  We're decorating the shop and bringing in lots of goodies for stockings and gifts.  We are planning a "Husbands/kids" night for Thursday December 14th.  This is the night to send your significant others to Periwinkle so they can choose that quilty gift you've been wanting.  We will have the Wish Binder at the ready so you can write down anything your heart desires (keep it quilt related though! hee hee!) or send me an email and I can write it in for you!  My husband, Byron, has been dying to host an event and it was his idea to have a husbands/kids night.  And fear not, Jen and I will be there too to help with questions etc.  So mark your calendars, leave notes around for December 14th  5:00 - 9:00pm!  I will be sending out an email announcing this too so if you're not on the Periwinkle email list just send me an email and we can add you!
Our holiday hours are pretty straight forward this year.  We will be closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day and New Years Day.  The rest of the hours for the shop will be as usual.

Looking ahead to 2018, we have our class list for January to April up on our website.  We also have paper copies in the shop if you prefer.  Lots of fun classes and opportunities to get together to quilt with like-minded folks.  I am also planning another Staycation Party so stay tuned for that!

Merry Christmas Everyone!  (And if you're not a Christmas observer, my best wishes to you this season!)

The First of Octember

Try to Remember the First of Octember was a Theo LeSieg book we used to read to our kids when they were small.  It's a fun story about an imaginary month full of promises of fun.  The name has always stuck with me.  This fall is speeding by and with September finished and October under way the name "Octember" seems to fit.

Our first Mini-Retreat was a huge success.  We had a full classroom with many wonderful projects being sewn up.  Here is a (not the best) photo of Bonnie and Betty's Canada 150 top.  The colours were so rich and beautiful.  And it was neat that it wasn't the standard red and white quilts we've been seeing.

We will be having more Mini-Retreats after Christmas.  With the quilt show in October, our big Shekinah retreat in November (which is now full) and Christmas in December we couldn't squeeze in another Mini-Retreat.  We do have our Quilt 'til you Wilts though so we'd love to have you join us for those.

And speaking of October, our latest pincushion of the month is now available.  A super cute little pumpkin!
And we are making preparations for the Saskatoon Quilters' Guild Quilt Show which will take place at Prairieland Park October 27th and 28th.  There is a great FB page Saskatoonquilts which shares some "sneak peeks" about the show.   Periwinkle Quilting is also the proud sponsor of the Trunk Show being held Saturday morning just before show opening at 9:00am.  The guest presenter is Elinor Burwash.  Information about Elinor can be found on the Saskatoonquilts FB page May 17 post.   Periwinkle will have a booth at the show and will be doing demos Friday at 5:30 and Saturday at 12:30 using the Westalee rulers.  And we will have a special coupon that show attendees can take back to our shop for fun, refreshments and good deals.
Outside of show preparations we continue with our Saturday Surprise Sampler blocks.  Blocks 1 and 2 are available with Block 3 available on the 14th of October.

We've got the next few blocks planned and done up and we are very pleased with how they all play well together.  This is going to be a fun and happy quilt top.

As ever we are always getting new fabrics and patterns in the shop.  Feel free to stop by and check things out.  We're always happy to see you.
